Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in many industries to automate processes, detect fraud, improve and personalize customer experience, and make predictive analysis. It is more than just a powerful business tool. Even life sciences are using artificial intelligence to improve and speed up clinical trials. Here are some ways AI can help.

AI CAN STREAMLINE THE CLINICAL TRIAL PROCESS

Many cancer patients are unable to participate in trials of life-saving drugs because of the time, cost and difficulty of traveling to a research facility. With the internet of things, researchers can conduct remote testing and then make use of artificial intelligence to quickly analyze and process the information and later protect the information with powerful cybersecurity measures.

AI CAN QUICKLY SELECT CANDIDATES FOR CLINICAL TRIALS

Pharmaceuticals often encounter expensive delays in recruiting candidates for drug testing.  Artificial intelligence can speed up the process by matching patient records with respect to conditions and specifications of the study. They can then find patients who match the criteria at a fraction of the time and cost involved.

Aside from the data extracted from files, data can be gathered from the patients themselves using smart devices such as the Apple Watch. These devices can monitor vitals and other important information and give real-time data on whether they fit into the bracket of the specified clinical study. This will help them from having to visit a clinic several times just to take qualifying medical tests.

AI CAN HELP PATIENTS FOLLOW CLINICAL TRIAL SPECIFICATIONS

The success of any clinical trial depends on patients following the medication regimen in the prescribed way. However, there are many cases where patients make mistakes, forget to take medicines, take them improperly or even fail to take the proper notes and records. This human error can affect the effectiveness of the study and increase the chances of patients dropping out in the middle of the clinical trial.

Artificial intelligence in mobile technologies like wireless pill bottles or sensors can help patient adhere to the trial protocol. Facial recognition technology and an AI coach can also help act as virtual “research assistants” who remind patients to take their medicines, answer questions, and more.

Artificial intelligence in medical apps can also help researchers monitor patient reactions and response to the drug. For example, researchers at Duke University use an iPhone app with finger tapping functions to study children with autism.

AI CAN CREATE A BASELINE FOR CLINICAL TRIALS

Google Project Baseline is a good example of how artificial intelligence can help conduct long term study. It is now enrolling over 10,000 patients who will be observed for 5 years. The study results could help establish an understanding of the placebo effect that can be used in future research.

AI CAN HELP GATHER ACCURATE PATIENT FEEDBACK

One of the challenges of patient reported results is that it is subjective. Patients may exaggerate, underreport or misreport their experience. However, patients can wear devices that can capture biometric signals that measure everything from heartbeat to the quality of their sleep. The data can be mined and analyzed through artificial intelligence that can give credence to the effect of a drug.
