You must have heard the term Artificial Intelligence quite a lot recently. This is because it has made it into news, articles, magazines, and a number of internet blogs. Moreover, there are a number of science fiction movies and books that revolve around artificial intelligence. While Artificial Intelligence sounds like a very complex thing, the underlying concept is rather simple. Simply put, Artificial Intelligence deals with machines that are capable of solving logical problems that will otherwise require human-level or greater intelligence capabilities. There are a number of technologies that artificial intelligence is used in. These include deep learning, machine learning, and artificial neural networks.
One of the major goals of Artificial Intelligence is to create a level of intelligence that is equivalent to that of humans. However, artificial intelligence has not yet reached the stage where it can take claim of a human level intelligence. This is because there are a number of emotions such as anger, empathy, along with other fundamental traits that are unique to humans. Simply put, this entire thing is not as simple as writing a code. Hence, it is a great challenge for artificial intelligence to build a robot that is human-like in its emotional traits. However, considering all the advances in the field of artificial intelligence, the goal of creating a humanoid robot is not an unrealistic one.
With more improvements in artificial intelligence capabilities, it looks like the creation of humanoid robots may indeed be possible. These capabilities may include an improvement in speech recognition, computer vision, localization, mapping, and mechanical aspects of the machines. There are a number of robots that are based on artificial intelligence. These robots operate in an independent way and learn from their surroundings.
After Sophia, the humanoid robot created by Hanson Robotics got activated in 2015 during the month of April. Since then, the growth in the AI capabilities has significantly increased. Since the time of her creation, Sophia has traveled around the world and has made a number of public appearances. Since then, she has also had a number of conversations with high-profile people. However, experts believe that the majority of the conversational statements that this robot makes are nothing but scripts.
Nevertheless, Sophia, the robot was able to get a Saudi citizenship. As a result of this, it became the first robot ever to get a citizenship of any country. The conversations that this robot makes are quite sophisticated.
Atlas was another humanoid sensation that could hop on boxes and execute backflips like a professional gymnast. It has been designed to master a sophisticated form of human movement called parkour. (Parkour includes movements like running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, crawling, rolling etc..These movements are particularly aimed at reaching one point from another based on what is deemed as most suitable for the situation).
Sporting a trendy brown bob is another humanoid robot named Erica, that was seen chatting to a man before a stunned audience in Madrid, Spain.
This simply shows that the creation of humanoids that would reach that level of artificial intelligence will require a number of breakthroughs but may indeed be possible somewhere in the far future. According to many experts, it is not possible to create a proper humanoid robot unless and until the nature of human emotions and consciousness is understood. Once understood, there will be a need to replicate these fundamental human traits in order to create a fully conscious robot.
While it looks like a difficult task, using artificial intelligence to create a humanoid may not remain a dream forever.
